Washing Machine Rant

Tuesday, February 07, 2006

This is a rant against old-fashioned washing machines: Top-loading, agitator-driven monstrosities found only in North America. While the rest of the known cosmos rejected top loaders in favour of front loaders several decades ago, here in Canada clunky top loaders are still the rage. I don't understand why - front loaders are smaller, use less electricity and water, AND do not destroy your clothes during washing - something the "agitation" process is guaranteed to do. Have you ever lifted up the flap and peered into the toploader during washing? That agitator thingy twists and tears at everything, it's no wonder few of my clothes survive longer than a year. The top loading piece of $%# here in our apartment has recently started refusing to drain properly, leaving clothes soggy. Also, it has started to smell. Just ban the lot of them, I say...If not for the environment, then do it for me...
