Dispatches from the sunburned wastelands

Since it became warmer, thousands of little (soon to become big) eight-legged critters have been stirring inside and around our house. And, as some of you know, the missus has a slight..."thing" for spiders. Last week, she discovered a massive hunting spider living in one of our garbage bins. So, after enduring several days of sudden shrieks, I decided to forget my environmental sensibilities, and brought a big can of spider-spray. I sprayed around all the doors and windows, but so far, however, it doesn't seem to be having any effect...The spiders are laughing at me...

And, in other news of a four-legged kind, we seem to have acquired a possum living somewhere in the vicinity of the house. We heard it clambering around the roof one night, and initially, we thought it might be an owl, due to the loud hissing noises it made. When I went to check it out, I found the cat-sized possum sitting on our pergola. It doesn't seem to be afraid of humans, somewhat like the raccoons in Canada.
