Drop-Bears

No, we didn't vanish off the face of the planet, we just went to Melbourne for a couple of days, where Hannelie had some meetings lined up with other people of a scientific persuasion. More about fabulous Melbourne later...On our way back, we spotted this little critter, sitting right in the middle of the busy road. It had just rained a little (it does happen, once in a while), and the cute little fellow was licking raindrops off the blacktop. We wondered what it was? Had it fallen out of a tree? Because....when you just arrive in Australia, the locals will tell you about drop-bears: they are supposedly little carnivorous bears with huge bottoms, who lurk around in big Bluegum trees, and when an unsuspecting traveler walks underneath, they will let go, and drop on their victim's head. Hey, there are stranger stuff in Australia than that....This could have been a drop bear ;) ....But I suspect it might rather have been a little lost Koala bear...
