Chauvinism
Wednesday, December 13, 2006
I am, perhaps foolishly, continually surprised by the chauvinistic culture that still prevails here. To illustrate, the following story. A new law recently came into effect here making the interior of all restaurants, pubs, bars etc. smoke-free (which is a good thing). This move lead to a smaller than usual turn-out at pubs and bars. However, this morning a radio ad enticed blokes to return to their favourite bar, arguing that "the wifey" won't notice that her man was in a bar, because there wouldn't be the usual whiff of cigarette smoke on his clothes. They went further, suggesting that the bloke may spend a longer than usual time at the bar with his friends, and they even offered the helpful advice to lie to the wife, with a story about working late at the office. Amazing.
I'm going for my first job interview tomorrow, so wish me luck. It's for an entry-level GIS job, but I guess it's better than staying at home all day (I know, it sounds weird, I always said I'd prefer to lounge under a tree instead of working, but its no fun being on a continuous holiday when you don't have any money to spend...).
Hou duim vas!

Best of luck at the Interview Hannes! I'm sure you'll do great!
Good Luck. You'll do fine.
How did it go?
