A Mouse for Breakfast

Sunday, October 09, 2005

Well, we're almost settled in now. There's only a few more boxes left to unpack, and I've already begun to scout around for the best place to buy bread, the best place for Saturday papers, and, oh yes: the best place for breakfast. Somehow this last thing is not so easy to find here, despite Halifax being a (much) larger city than Fredericton. We were spoiled by the Fredericton Delta's amazing Saturday morning buffet breakfasts, where they make you fresh Belgian waffles, with all the trimmings, as well as fresh omelets. In comparison, the (more expensive) Halifax hotels only provide stale, static buffets, with no fresh waffle in sight. Sigh.

Oh yes, before I forget, we went to the upmarket Westin hotel for breakfast this morning, and guess what we saw during breakfast: a little mouse scurried by! The Westin is close to the Halifax harbour, where they offload grains and such, and apparently that's the problem. There's also an infestation of rats elsewhere in the city. It's starting to sound like the city of Ankh-Morpork...(that's an inside joke, not to be understood by people not willing to read Terry Pratchett. Yes, you Shelly).

Hey, I knew it was from Jingo!
I want to say that we missed you at Thanksgiving dinner yesterday. It just wasn't the same.
