Human rights (or the lack thereof)
Friday, April 06, 2007
Somebody told me recently that Australia is the only western democracy without an official Charter of Human Rights. Don't know if it's true - but if it is, it's shameful. There was a big fuss here about the way the Australian David Hicks was treated by the Americans at Guantanamo Bay - 5 years without a trial, alleged torture, etc. Well, this from a country without any human rights legislation - that would be just a little hypocritical, don't you think? Especially considering the way Australia is treating refugees and illegal immigrants trying to reach its shores - they are put in a detention camp on an island away from the mainland, sometimes for years. Without trial.

People wanted to know what Martin's boots-n'-braces look like. Well, here's pic. Hannelie made a little wrap-around sock for the brace, otherwise he might kick his cot linen (and us) full of holes with the sharp edges of the metal.
Groete, J4
