We briefly visited the land of the great white cloud recently. A week in Christchurch (with me babysitting), bookended by a day on the TranzAlpine Express and a few days on a wine farm near Kaikoura, and we were smitten. It's a beautiful country, with spectacular scenery, and I can understand why movie directors choose to film their mega-blockbusters (Lord of the Rings, Narnia) there. The photo above was taken from the plane on the way back to Oz - the pilot pointed it out as Mt .Doom from the land of Mordor (!). I'm sure Tolkien would've approved. We just have to get back for a longer visit, preferably in Summer.
