Halifax restaurants

After being in Halifax for a month or two, I think I can report on some of the restaurants we've been to. Halifax probably has some of the best restaurants in Atlantic Canada (although , in a region where a lot of places only serve fried food, this might not be saying much). Anyway, here goes: The Wooden Monkey(picture above), downtown on Argyle Street is a firm favourite. It's not really an upmarket (i.e. expensive) place, but all their ingredients are either organic or free-range, which makes al the differnce in the taste. (By the way, we still haven't found a good local butcher to replace the excellent Yerxa's free range beef we found at the Fredericton market). A close second is Jane's on the Commons, on Robie Street just across from the Halifax Commons. Sort of a mix between eclectic and upscale, this small restaurant is excellent. I also hear they serve a mean brunch on Sundays. We've also been to the Press Gang, on Prince Street, supposedly one of THE restaurants in Halifax, but I found the food so-so, and overpriced. A place for a nice steak and beer without a rowdy pub crowd is Quincy's on the corner of Oxford and Quinpool. There's also Athens Restaurant close by (also on Quinpool), for inexpensive Greek food. Of course, for the best Greek in town you have to go to Opa's, although we haven't been there for a few years now. There's a lot of places we still have to try, budget and waistline allowing, like the Japanese steakhouse (Hamachi) on the Bishop's Landing waterfront. And, of course, there's the ongoing search for that ever elusive great little breakfast place...
