Dispatches from the sunburned wastelands

Autumn has sprung, even here in the pathetic little area of our backyard formerly known as a garden. This is one of the best times of year to be in the capital - tomorrow morning we might (if we can force ourselves out of bed) go and see about 40 hot air balloons taking off from parliament hill, at the annual Canberra balloon festival (where else in the world will they let you do that, I wonder? Just imagine trying to get permission to launch a balloon from the White House lawns.
